![]() There’s no doubt that this is a top quality algorithm from one of the most highly revered manufacturers of DSP hardware. Compared side by side with similar patches on the £400 Space pedal, Blackhole sounds practically identical. Overall, the sound is every bit as rich, detailed and expensive-sounding as Eventide’s reputation would suggest. It’s not clear exactly how it works but it can create some great sounds. Even the Size parameter can be set to negative values. Turning anti-clockwise past the 12 o’clock setting, negative Gravity values can be dialed in, creating reverse reverb. Rather than the traditional decay setting, Blackhole offers a Gravity parameter. Some of the controls may be unusual, but you’ll have no problem picking them up within five minutes, even without resorting to the manual. The plugin is available in Mac or PC VST, AU and AAX formats and, after a trouble-free installation, the sound options are easy to get the hang of. Instead, Blackhole is all about creative applications of reverb, focusing on “huge spaces and out-of-this-world soundscapes”. If you’re looking for subtle echo effects and realistic emulations of acoustic spaces, this probably isn’t the product for you. ![]() Let’s make it clear from the start that Blackhole isn’t a typical reverb plugin. The new native Blackhole plugin is based on an algorithm first found in the DSP4000 multi-effect launched in 1999 and resurrected in last year’s excellent Space reverb pedal. We find out what this unique plugin has to offer dance music producers.Īs manufacturers of the legendary Hamonizer effect units, Eventide were instrumental in the development of digital effect hardware from the late 1970s onwards. And it has over 50 presets created by seasoned sound designers and musicians such as Richard Devine, Vernon Reid, John Agnello, Jonsi and Alex, Flood, and more.Blackhole takes a creative approach to reverb. In any case, it’s simple and easy to use, with quick and smooth adjustments.īlackhole also offers full support for the Native Instruments NKS system. So users of the pedal will find themselves at home here. The interface is quite similar to the real-world pedal version, with the addition of the Ribbon functionality. The Freeze button infinitely continues the reverb in its current state. HotSwitch allows you to quickly jump between two different delay settings while altering the mix. ![]() Kill immediately stops all input while the reverb continues. There are also options for tempo-synchronization and three switches Kill, HotSwitch, and Freeze. This lets you vary the sound via automation and get some interesting effects. So when you adjust the setting on the ribbon, the controls change proportionally. ![]() You can adjust the handles to set a range, including a separate range for each control. ![]() This exaggerated and ethereal reverb is what makes Blackhole a masterpiece and a favorite amongst many musicians.Īnother handy feature is the Ribbon – every control knob has a concentric circle with two sliding handles. Along with the other controls, feedback can help you make spacey, otherworldly effects that you won’t find in most other plugins. Gravity allows you to inverse the reverb decay by setting a negative magnitude, allowing for some really cool effects.įeedback adds a separate layer of depth to the reverb, giving you even more control. Plus, you get unique effects such as Gravity and Feedback. The controls on the UI include common ones like Mix, Size, PreDelay, Modulation (Depth and Rate), and EQ (Low, High, and Resonance). At this deal price, it’s certainly a steal and worth experimenting with. This is also a lot more affordable than the guitar pedal version, which currently costs around $299.īlackhole is one of the most innovative reverbs out there, with a number of ambient effects that are a must-have for any sound designer or musician. VSTBuzz has a new deal when you can get the Blackhole reverb by Eventide for just €29 instead of the usual €188 (a massive 85% discount!). ![]()
